OpenAI is reportedly struggling to meet its projected revenue and user growth targets, raising significant concerns about its ability to support extensive data center expenditures. According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar has voiced worries regarding the company's capacity to finance future computing agreements if the slowdown in revenue persists. In light of these challenges, Friar is collaborating with other leaders within the organization to implement cost-control measures, as the board of directors intensifies its scrutiny of OpenAI's computing contracts. In response to the unfolding situation, OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman and Friar issued a joint statement to CNBC, asserting, "This is ridiculous. We are totally aligned on buying as much compute as we can and working hard on it together every day." The report has triggered a decline in shares for various tech firms, including chip manufacturers like Oracle, amid rising concerns about OpenAI's financial resilience ahead of its much-anticipated initial public offering later this year. Recently, OpenAI and other hyperscale companies have invested billions into data centers to accommodate soaring computing demands, with many of these agreements closely linked to OpenAI's operations. Notably, Oracle has established a monumental five-year computing contract worth $300 billion with OpenAI, while Nvidia has committed billions to support the startup. Additionally, OpenAI has formed a significant strategic alliance with Amazon, augmenting an existing $38 billion spending agreement by an additional $100 billion. This week also saw OpenAI announce crucial modifications to its partnership with Microsoft, a long-standing investor that has contributed over $13 billion since 2019. As part of these changes, OpenAI will limit revenue share payments, and Microsoft will relinquish its exclusive licensing rights to the company's intellectual property.
