ChatGPT continues to dominate the AI chatbot landscape, but its developer, OpenAI, is actively seeking ways to monetize this popular tool. While subscription models play a crucial role in their strategy, the company is also contemplating the integration of advertisements into ChatGPT. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has expressed a willingness to explore advertising options, suggesting a preference for personalized, Instagram-style ads. However, the company has yet to formally outline what such advertisements would entail within the chatbot's framework. In a recent discussion with WIRED, Fidji Simo, OpenAI's CEO of Applications, addressed the topic of advertising in ChatGPT. She remarked, "Advertising as a model thrives when there's significant commerce intent. We already see this, with users frequently seeking shopping advice. Before we even consider ads, we must ensure that our commerce experience is exceptional. Users should feel free to explore products and receive top-notch recommendations." Simo emphasized that any advertising initiative would need to prioritize user respect and experience, explaining, "That's why we haven't made any announcements regarding ads—if we proceed, it must be a fundamentally different approach than what has been previously established." Notably, Simo brings extensive experience in advertising from her previous tenure at Meta, where she played a pivotal role in developing mobile ad products and video advertising. She noted, "From my experience in creating ad platforms, I've learned that the primary discomfort users have with ads often stems not from the ads themselves, but from how their data is utilized." Recent reports suggest that OpenAI is considering leveraging ChatGPT's memory feature to deliver ads tailored to individual users. This memory capability personalizes user interactions, making it a potentially powerful tool for targeted advertising. Additionally, sources indicate that OpenAI is actively searching for a leader to develop a new team focused on generating substantial revenue through ads, with Simo reportedly meeting with candidates, including former colleagues from Facebook. As OpenAI continues to refine its strategy, the future of advertising on ChatGPT remains a topic of keen interest within the tech community.
