In a significant shift for OpenAI, two executives have announced their exits from the company, marking the latest chapter in a series of leadership changes at the artificial intelligence firm. Bill Peebles, who was at the helm of the now-defunct short-form video app Sora, and Kevin Weil, who served as the vice president for OpenAI for Science, took to X on Friday to confirm their departures. An OpenAI representative stated that the organization is restructuring OpenAI for Science to align its efforts more closely with the teams responsible for developing advanced model capabilities, products, and infrastructure. This overhaul follows recent announcements of leave by other high-profile executives, including Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s product and business head, who is taking a medical leave due to a worsening neuroimmune condition. Additionally, Kate Rouch, the marketing chief, stepped down earlier this month to focus on her recovery from cancer, while Brad Lightcap transitioned to a new role centered on "special projects." Weil joined OpenAI in 2024 and initially held the position of chief product officer before launching OpenAI for Science the following year, aiming to create an AI-driven platform designed to accelerate scientific breakthroughs. He previously held significant roles at both Meta and Twitter. In his farewell message, Weil reflected on his transformative two-year journey, stating, "It's been a mind-expanding two years, from Chief Product Officer to joining the research team and starting OpenAI for Science." Peebles, who began his tenure at OpenAI in 2023, played a crucial role in the launch of Sora, which quickly garnered attention and reached the top of the Apple App Store. The app allowed users to create and share short videos but was discontinued last month as OpenAI sought to cut costs and reallocate computing resources ahead of a potential IPO. Expressing his pride in the team's efforts, Peebles remarked, "I'm proud of all the sleepless nights before and after the launch this team endured in order to deploy the technology in a responsible way and help steer societal norms. Sora was a project that could not have happened anywhere but OpenAI, and I will always deeply love this place for that."
