OpenAI to acquire Ona to support its AI coding assistant, Codex

In a significant move, OpenAI has announced its acquisition of Ona, a startup known for its innovative, secure cloud environments tailored for artificial intelligence operations. This strategic buy aims to bolster the capabilities of OpenAI's coding assistant, Codex, enabling it to handle more complex, long-duration tasks effectively. The integration of Ona's technology is expected to empower more organizations to implement AI agents that autonomously complete tasks on users' behalf. While the financial details of the acquisition remain undisclosed, it is subject to standard closing conditions. Once the deal is finalized, Ona's talented team will join OpenAI, contributing their expertise to the Codex project. Johannes Landgraf, CEO of Ona, expressed his sentiments on LinkedIn, stating that rather than feeling like an ending, the sale signifies a major expansion of their collective vision and mission. Since the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, OpenAI has been a driving force in the AI landscape, significantly enhancing investment in Codex as software developers increasingly incorporate AI agents into their workflows. This growth comes as OpenAI faces stiff competition from Anthropic, which has also seen remarkable expansion, particularly with its own AI coding assistant, Claude Code. Currently, Codex boasts over 5 million weekly active users, a notable increase from 3 million in April, while Anthropic has not publicly disclosed its user statistics for Claude Code. Amidst this competitive environment, OpenAI has been actively pursuing acquisitions to maintain its edge, having recently acquired cybersecurity startup Promptfoo and healthcare tech firm Torch for around $60 million. This follows earlier acquisitions, including Software Applications, which developed the AI interface known as Sky for Mac users. In a broader context, the tech industry is abuzz with developments, including Elon Musk's SpaceX, which is set to make its historical public market debut following its merger with AI startup xAI. As OpenAI continues to innovate and expand, the implications for the future of AI technology remain profound and exciting.
