OpenAI to acquire the team behind executive coaching AI tool Convogo

In an exciting start to the year, OpenAI has announced its latest acqui-hire, this time integrating the talented team behind Convogo. This innovative business software platform has been pivotal in assisting executive coaches, consultants, and HR professionals in streamlining leadership assessments and feedback processes. An OpenAI representative clarified that the company is not acquiring Convogo's intellectual property or technology. Instead, the focus is on bringing the co-founders—Matt Cooper, Evan Cater, and Mike Gillett—on board to enhance OpenAI's initiatives in AI cloud development. As part of this transition, Convogo's flagship product will be phased out. The inception of Convogo was a result of a weekend hackathon inspired by a question posed by Cooper's mother, an executive coach herself. She wondered whether an AI tool could alleviate the burdens of report writing, allowing coaches to concentrate on the personal interactions they cherish. Over the past two years, Convogo has successfully assisted thousands of coaches and collaborated with leading firms in leadership development. In a message regarding the acquisition, the Convogo team highlighted a crucial insight: the challenge of translating the potential of new AI models into tangible, real-world applications. They expressed their belief that the solution lies in creating thoughtful, tailored experiences, similar to those they developed at Convogo. The founders conveyed their excitement about joining OpenAI, stating their commitment to making AI more accessible and beneficial for professionals across various sectors. This acquisition marks OpenAI's ninth in a year, according to data from PitchBook. Historically, many previous acquisitions have seen products integrated into OpenAI’s ecosystem or shut down entirely as teams transitioned into the company. However, the acquisition of Jonny Ive’s io Products stands out, as it continues to follow its own product development path while collaborating with OpenAI on AI hardware. This strategic move underscores OpenAI's ongoing commitment to leveraging mergers and acquisitions as a means to enhance its talent pool and capabilities, aligning itself with industry trends among competitors.
