On Thursday, OpenAI revealed its acquisition of Software Applications, Inc., the creators of an innovative AI-driven natural language interface named Sky, designed specifically for Mac computers. Although the software has not yet been made available to the public, its capabilities aim to enhance user productivity by seamlessly integrating with various applications such as writing, planning, and coding. Sky operates similarly to AI browsers, enabling it to observe users' screens and interact with applications on their behalf. This acquisition represents a pivotal advancement for OpenAI, as it seeks to incorporate its technology into the daily lives of consumers and businesses utilizing Mac systems. Ari Weinstein, co-founder and CEO of Software Applications, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "We’ve always wanted computers to be more empowering, customizable, and intuitive. With LLMs, we can finally put the pieces together. That’s why we built Sky, an AI experience that floats over your desktop to help you think and create. We’re thrilled to join OpenAI to bring that vision to hundreds of millions of people." The team behind Sky boasts a notable history in tech innovation. Weinstein and co-founder Conrad Kramer previously established Workflow, which was acquired by Apple and evolved into what is now known as Shortcuts. They, along with COO Kim Beverett, who has nearly a decade of experience at Apple, founded Software Applications in August 2023. Apple has been observed to lag in the AI sector but is anticipated to unveil a revamped version of Siri with enhanced AI capabilities next year. The tech giant has already introduced several features utilizing its own AI, branded as Apple Intelligence, which includes writing assistance and live translation. Furthermore, Apple is collaborating with OpenAI to redirect Siri queries that it cannot address to ChatGPT. While Apple emphasizes privacy in its AI offerings, the introduction of an AI system that monitors user screens and performs actions could raise concerns among privacy-conscious users. As agentic AI technology is still developing, there are ongoing discussions about the safety risks associated with AI browsers. This could delay Apple's entry into the Mac AI market. Details surrounding the terms of the acquisition by OpenAI remain undisclosed, but reports indicate that Sky's creators had previously secured $6.5 million in funding from a range of investors, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Figma CEO Dylan Field. The deal was spearheaded by Nick Turley, Head of ChatGPT, along with Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, and received board approval.
