In a recent discussion on the A16z podcast, Alexander Embiricos, the product lead at OpenAI, expressed concern about the future of computer science education. He emphasized that students should be wary if their colleges restrict the use of AI technologies. "If I were studying computer science right now and my institution didn't permit the use of any AI, I would feel like I was lagging behind," he stated. Embiriocos remains optimistic about the field, asserting that now is still an excellent time to pursue a degree in computer science. He believes that the demand for software engineers will continue to grow as software development expands. However, he urged students to integrate AI into their learning processes. "It's crucial to constantly find ways to use AI in your studies," he advised. While OpenAI may not be recruiting many entry-level positions, Embiricos noted that he places significant importance on whether candidates have practical experience. "When reviewing profiles of new graduates, I look for evidence of projects they’ve built and links to their work," he explained. As the landscape of computer science education evolves, educators are reassessing how they teach the subject in light of the increasing capabilities of AI tools like OpenAI's GPT-5-Codex. Thomas Cortina, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, remarked that AI has profoundly impacted computer science education, with students experiencing a shift as they realize the limitations of their understanding when relying too heavily on AI for assignments. Embiricos shares a common perspective with other OpenAI leaders, including chairman Bret Taylor, who acknowledges that a computer science degree still holds significant value, particularly for developing critical systems thinking skills. OpenAI researcher Szymon Sidor also encourages high school students to continue learning coding skills. When asked about his vision for restructuring computer science programs, Embiricos emphasized the importance of fostering adaptability in students. He proposed a curriculum that includes manual coding exercises to help students grasp foundational concepts and build confidence. Ultimately, he advocates for a focus on practical outcomes, whether through project completion or skill acquisition.
