OpenAI just launched its own version of an app store, taking aim at Apple and Google

OpenAI is set to disrupt the app landscape with its announcement of a new app store, a strategic move aimed directly at established players like Apple and Google. During its recent DevDay event, the AI powerhouse revealed its plans to integrate applications within ChatGPT, which boasts an impressive 800 million users every week, according to CEO Sam Altman. The company introduced an app software development kit (SDK) designed to empower developers to create their own applications for ChatGPT, effectively transforming the platform into an interactive app ecosystem. When users first mention an app within ChatGPT, they will be prompted to connect and select their data-sharing preferences. This seamless integration allows users to interact with apps using natural language, enabling requests like asking Spotify to curate a playlist or Zillow to showcase specific property listings, with results displayed directly in the ChatGPT interface. Altman expressed enthusiasm about this initiative, stating, "This will enable a new generation of apps that are interactive, adaptive, and personalized — that you can chat with. We hope this will be a big deal for helping developers rapidly scale products." OpenAI plans to begin accepting app submissions for review and publication later this year, along with revealing monetization options for developers. The app store's commerce functionality will also allow users to make purchases directly within ChatGPT, a model similar to how traditional app stores operate, which generate substantial revenue through transaction fees. Furthermore, OpenAI will launch a directory for users to explore apps, highlighting those that meet elevated standards for design and functionality. Initially, the platform will feature partnerships with notable names like Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Spotify, and Zillow, with additional partners including AllTrails, Khan Academy, Instacart, Peloton, Target, Tripadvisor, and Uber expected to join later this year.
