OpenAI is introducing a revamped shopping experience within ChatGPT, aiming to simplify how users discover and compare products. This change follows the company's struggles with its Instant Checkout feature, which did not gain the traction it had anticipated. On Tuesday, OpenAI announced that users can now find items by uploading images or describing them, including details such as budget and personal preferences. The updated system promises to deliver more visual results, making it easier for consumers to evaluate various products. According to a blog post from OpenAI, significant improvements have been made to enhance speed, relevance, and product coverage, ensuring that users receive the most current and useful information. This shift comes after the company decided to step back from the Instant Checkout feature, which previously allowed direct purchases from retailers like Etsy, Walmart, and Shopify. Originally launched last year, Instant Checkout was heralded as a pivotal development in AI-powered commerce. However, experts indicated that OpenAI may have underestimated the challenges involved in transaction facilitation, including onboarding merchants and providing accurate product data. In its latest update, OpenAI acknowledged that the first iteration of Instant Checkout lacked the flexibility they aimed to achieve. Instead, they are now allowing merchants to maintain their own checkout processes while focusing on improving product discovery. Merchants can now share product feeds and promotions with OpenAI, ensuring their offerings are well-represented in ChatGPT. Retail giants like Target, Sephora, and Nordstrom have already embraced this new product discovery feature. Furthermore, businesses looking for more integrated solutions can develop custom applications within ChatGPT, a functionality introduced at OpenAI's annual developer conference in October. This custom app feature enables companies to enhance customer experience and streamline transactions. In a related announcement, Walmart unveiled an in-app ChatGPT service that supports loyalty programs and payment options. Additionally, Shopify has committed to upgrading its shopping functionality within ChatGPT, allowing merchants to link their catalogs for seamless in-app purchases. Shopify is also launching a new service called Agentic Plan to help merchants without storefronts showcase their products through various platforms, including ChatGPT and Google Gemini.
