OpenAI is currently in the spotlight, especially with CEO Sam Altman addressing both the excitement and challenges surrounding the rollout of the latest large language model, GPT-5. This launch follows a somewhat tumultuous debut that saw many users requesting access to previous models like GPT-4. However, OpenAI is now more focused on adapting its infrastructure to better meet the needs of its 700 million active weekly users. The recent updates include a refined compute allocation strategy and the introduction of several third-party tool connectors for users on the ChatGPT Plus and Pro plans. In a recent post, Altman detailed the company's priorities for resource allocation in response to the surge in demand for GPT-5. He emphasized that existing paying users would receive greater usage allowances than before the GPT-5 rollout, although specific figures were not disclosed. Interestingly, Altman shared that the current plan allows for about 3,000 messages per week for ChatGPT Plus users utilizing the new “thinking” mode, which offers enhanced reasoning capabilities. However, reports suggest that users on the Team plan may face stricter limits, with only 200 “thinking” messages permitted each week. Furthermore, OpenAI is making adjustments to the availability of GPT-5 through its API for third-party developers. Altman stated that they would prioritize API access for existing customers and those with ongoing contracts, indicating a calculated approach to growth. He also mentioned that the company is poised to support about 30% more API users than currently accommodated. To enhance user experience, OpenAI has added new integrations allowing ChatGPT Plus subscribers to connect with various third-party applications such as Dropbox, Microsoft Teams, and Notion. This feature will enable users to search for files and projects directly within ChatGPT, streamlining workflows significantly. For ChatGPT Pro users, additional connectors to platforms like Microsoft Teams and GitHub have been introduced, expanding the capabilities of the service. However, it's worth noting that these new features are currently not available to users in Europe, Switzerland, and the UK. As OpenAI works on stabilizing the rollout of GPT-5, the combination of improved capacity planning and these new integrations positions the model as a pivotal tool for productivity in the workplace. The company aims to ensure that existing users see the benefits of these enhancements first, setting the stage for future demand as it continues to expand its computational resources.
