OpenAI is making strides to enhance user experience with ChatGPT, making it more challenging to identify when the AI has been utilized. Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, announced that users can now instruct the chatbot to avoid using the em dash—a distinctive feature of its writing style. In a recent post on X, Altman highlighted this improvement, stating, "If you tell ChatGPT not to use em-dashes in your custom instructions, it finally does what it's supposed to do!" This update addresses feedback from users who expressed frustration over the chatbot's tendency to overlook requests to omit em dashes. While this punctuation mark is favored by many writers to convey surprise or contrast, some individuals have refrained from using it due to concerns about being perceived as having relied on ChatGPT. Altman referred to this enhancement as a "small-but-happy win," reflecting OpenAI's ongoing commitment to making ChatGPT more adaptable. The company has been rolling out additional features, such as a memory function that allows users to ask the chatbot to retain specific details, including formatting preferences, for future interactions. Although Altman acknowledged that ChatGPT has other recognizable traits, like the use of clichéd phrases, he did not provide information about potential adjustments to those aspects.
