In a landmark event for the artificial intelligence sector, employees at OpenAI have collectively sold approximately $6.6 billion worth of shares, marking one of the largest instances of private wealth creation in the industry. This significant share sale, reported by The Wall Street Journal, took place in October of the previous year. The transaction enabled over 600 current and former OpenAI staff members to liquidate a portion of their equity, with the company being valued around $400 billion. Under the terms of the agreement, certain employees were permitted to sell as much as $30 million in shares, with around 75 individuals reportedly reaching this maximum limit. Additionally, many employees opted to transfer their remaining shares into donor-advised funds. This strategy not only allowed them to contribute to charitable causes but also provided valuable tax advantages. Such wealth generation among employees ahead of a public offering is a notable occurrence in Silicon Valley. The anticipated IPOs of AI companies, including OpenAI and competitors like Anthropic, are expected to create some of the largest public listings in tech history. Employees who joined OpenAI after the introduction of ChatGPT were able to participate in this share sale for the first time, following a two-year holding period. The remarkable rise in OpenAI's valuation has dramatically increased the worth of employee stock grants. According to reports, those who initially received shares when the company began issuing equity seven years ago have witnessed their investments multiply over 100 times in value. In the ongoing battle for top AI talent, compensation packages across the industry have surged, with OpenAI offering some technical roles annual salaries exceeding $500,000, in addition to significant stock options. The competition has intensified, with companies like Meta investing heavily in AI personnel, reportedly providing select researchers with compensation packages worth hundreds of millions. Previously, OpenAI had set a cap on employee secondary share sales at $10 million per transaction but later increased this limit to $30 million in response to robust investor interest in leading AI startups.
