OpenAI employees want everyone to know Sam Altman is totally receptive to pushback

In a recent wave of support for their CEO, OpenAI employees have emphasized Sam Altman's willingness to listen to critical feedback. Eric Mitchell, who co-leads the company's Post-training Frontiers team, shared his personal experiences, stating that there have been numerous instances where he disagreed with leadership and expressed his frustrations directly to Altman. Mitchell noted, "Sam always responded with curiosity, open-mindedness, and even deference when I've brought disagreement, complaint, or correction to him." One notable instance occurred during Mitchell's initial six months at OpenAI, where he and other staff reacted to a now-deleted post by Nick Huber, an AI product leader. In the post, Huber detailed an interview with OpenAI where he was asked to provide data supporting a belief supposedly held by Altman. OpenAI did not comment on whether Huber had been interviewed. Mitchell refuted claims that the organization fosters a culture of retaliation against honest criticism. Supporting his stance, former OpenAI employees also praised Altman for his receptiveness. Gabriel Petersson, a former researcher, remarked, "Can confirm, Sam is super receptive." Will DePue, another former staffer, stated that the company was "exceptionally receptive to internal disagreement and critique." Brandon McKinzie, an OpenAI researcher, echoed these sentiments on X, stating, "Not only do they listen to critical feedback, they take it very seriously and take action on it. It is one of OpenAI's greatest strengths." Research from 2021 indicates that fostering an environment where employees can voice their criticisms enhances their sense of psychological safety, which is crucial for productive work. This concept was highlighted by Google in 2015 as a top trait of effective teams. Altman's leadership has been under scrutiny following his brief removal and subsequent return to the CEO role earlier this year. During a recent court case involving Elon Musk, Altman asserted, "I believe I am an honest and trustworthy business person." The events surrounding his leadership, referred to internally as "the Blip," are set to be dramatized in an upcoming film directed by Luca Guadagnino. Many OpenAI employees shared their thoughts on the importance of having challenging discussions, with Victor Nunez, who works on the Codex coding tool, stating that the frequency of tough conversations and humor at the company is remarkable, emphasizing the distinctly human culture at OpenAI amid its focus on AI and automation.
