A recent post on Reddit hinted at a sensational reveal involving OpenAI, showcasing a supposed Super Bowl advertisement featuring actor Alexander Skarsgård and a futuristic device known as the "Dime." However, OpenAI has swiftly labeled the claim as entirely false. Greg Brockman, co-founder and president of OpenAI, wasted no time in addressing the viral post, which has since been deleted. He took to social media platform X to declare, "fake news," firmly denying any association with the alleged advertisement. An OpenAI representative reinforced Brockman’s statement, clarifying to Business Insider that the purported ad was not genuine. The Reddit claim suggested that OpenAI had chosen to air a different Super Bowl ad featuring its Codex product instead of the supposed device promotion. While OpenAI is indeed developing AI-driven hardware, details remain sparse. Notably, last year, CEO Sam Altman and former Apple design chief Jony Ive announced their collaboration, and OpenAI acquired Ive's AI hardware startup for approximately $6.5 billion. Ive has indicated that a new device could be launched within two years. During a panel discussion, Altman expressed a vision for the device’s simplicity, aiming to create a product that seamlessly integrates into users' lives. He emphasized the importance of minimizing unnecessary features while maximizing functionality. Despite the misinformation, many Reddit users were initially taken in by the fake leak, including Alexis Ohanian, Reddit's co-founder, who humorously remarked on the platform's knack for breaking news. OpenAI's communications officer, Lindsay McCallum Rémy, promptly rebutted the claims, reiterating that the ad was completely fabricated. As one of the biggest platforms for advertising, the Super Bowl saw OpenAI air its second-ever commercial, promoting Codex, its advanced coding assistant. The ad creatively interwove imagery from a classroom to iconic figures like Albert Einstein, culminating with the empowering message: "You can just build things."
