OpenAI kills ChatGPT feature that exposed personal chats on Google

OpenAI has announced the discontinuation of a controversial feature that allowed ChatGPT conversations to appear in Google Search results. This functionality, which was quietly introduced earlier this year, sparked significant backlash after private discussions began surfacing in search results, raising serious privacy issues for users. Dane Stuckey, OpenAI's Chief Information Security Officer, shared the decision via a post on X (formerly Twitter), explaining that the feature had been intended as an experiment to help people discover valuable conversations. Users were required to opt-in by selecting specific chats and enabling the sharing option. However, Stuckey acknowledged that the feature inadvertently created risks for users who might accidentally expose sensitive information. “Ultimately, we believe this feature introduced too many opportunities for individuals to share unintended content, so we're removing the option,” Stuckey stated. He further mentioned that OpenAI is collaborating with search engines to eliminate any content that has already been indexed. The update allowing discoverability was presented as an opt-in feature, yet many users may have unintentionally activated it while attempting to share conversations with others. As OpenAI CEO Sam Altman highlighted in a recent podcast, users often discuss deeply personal matters with ChatGPT. A report from Fast Company revealed that over 4,500 conversations had been indexed by Google, some of which contained identifiable information such as names and locations that could expose users to risks. Even if users deleted the conversation link or the chat itself, there was no guarantee that the content would be removed from Google's index, potentially leaving it accessible until the search engine updates its records.
