OpenAI pushes back on Apple trade secret lawsuit

OpenAI has responded to the trade secret lawsuit filed by Apple, asserting that the claims lack substance. In a statement shared by Bloomberg journalist Ed Ludlow on social media platform X, OpenAI emphasized, "While we take these allegations seriously, we’re not aware of any evidence that this complaint has merit. We believe in fair competition and the freedom for individuals to work wherever they choose, and our focus remains on developing innovative technology that empowers people globally." This statement comes shortly after Apple launched its legal action, accusing OpenAI employees, who were previously employed by Apple, of orchestrating a deliberate scheme to acquire confidential information and intellectual property. The lawsuit, spanning 41 pages, was filed on Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California and includes serious accusations directed at OpenAI's leadership, including Chief Hardware Officer Tang Tan. Tan, a former Apple veteran with a 24-year tenure at the company, held significant roles, such as vice president of product design for the iPhone and Apple Watch. OpenAI's latest remarks mark their first public response to the lawsuit. Previously, after the lawsuit was filed, they indicated to TechCrunch their disinterest in the technologies of other firms, stating, "We have no interest in other companies’ trade secrets. We remain focused on building innovative technology that empowers people everywhere." According to Apple's lawsuit, an internal investigation allegedly revealed that OpenAI and its partners misused the company’s confidential information while developing their own hardware products. Recent reports, combined with OpenAI's acquisition of Jony Ive’s startup io, suggest that the AI lab is venturing into a product that may rival Apple’s offerings. Bloomberg reported that OpenAI is reportedly developing a mobile, screen-free smart speaker.
