OpenAI is rethinking ChatGPT pricing — and 'unlimited' plans may not last, its boss says

OpenAI is contemplating significant changes to its pricing strategy for ChatGPT as the landscape of artificial intelligence evolves. Nick Turley, the head of ChatGPT, expressed in a recent podcast that the current model, which includes 'unlimited' subscription plans, may not be sustainable long-term. During his conversation with Apoorv Agrawal on the 'Bg2 Pod', Turley highlighted the necessity for the company to adapt its pricing in response to the swift changes in AI technology. He noted that the original launch of ChatGPT was intended as a temporary demo, but the overwhelming positive reception led to a rapid shift toward a subscription model to accommodate user demand. ChatGPT currently offers a free version alongside paid plans, including a Plus tier for $20 per month and a Pro tier for $200 per month, which provides enhanced performance and unlimited prompts. Turley described the introduction of subscriptions as an 'accidental' solution to manage the platform's capacity. As AI technologies advance and require more computational power, the viability of unlimited plans is under scrutiny. Turley compared the concept of unlimited subscriptions to an 'unlimited electricity plan,' suggesting it might not be practical. This sentiment aligns with comments from OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, who previously mentioned that AI services could be priced similarly to electricity, based on usage. Tech giants are anticipated to invest heavily in computing resources to meet the growing demands of AI, prompting OpenAI to explore more flexible pricing structures that correlate with actual usage while still prioritizing access for users. Turley indicated that the company is considering various options, including advertising, to support users who may not afford subscriptions. In light of these developments, it is clear that OpenAI's approach to pricing is part of a broader industry trend, with other companies also rethinking their models to adapt to the changing dynamics of AI demand and capabilities.
