Apple–OpenAI partnership under pressure over ChatGPT expansion: Report

OpenAI is reportedly contemplating legal measures against Apple concerning the integration of ChatGPT within the iOS ecosystem. Initially, this integration was anticipated to enhance OpenAI's subscriber base and provide significant functionalities across Apple devices such as iPhones and Macs. However, the anticipated growth and visibility from this collaboration have not materialized as expected. According to a recent report from Bloomberg, OpenAI's legal team is actively engaged in discussions with external law firms to evaluate various legal pathways. Before proceeding with any formal action, OpenAI may issue a legal notice to Apple, alleging a breach of contract. An executive from OpenAI expressed frustration, stating, "We have done everything from a product perspective. They have not, and worse, they haven’t even made an honest effort." This partnership, unveiled during the World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024, was designed to integrate ChatGPT into Apple platforms through Siri and Visual Intelligence, allowing users to easily interact with the AI chatbot. Despite the potential for widespread use, recent reports indicate that OpenAI feels the ChatGPT features are not prominently displayed within Apple's software, leading to user difficulties in accessing them. This situation has resulted in revenues that fall short of OpenAI's initial expectations. On a separate note, Apple has raised concerns regarding OpenAI's privacy standards. There are also indications that Apple is less than pleased about OpenAI's ventures into hardware. Meanwhile, the tech giant is collaborating with Google to advance its next-generation AI model and enhance its AI capabilities.
