OpenAI proposes giving Trump Administration a 5% stake

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is reportedly in discussions to offer the U.S. government a 5% equity stake in the company. This potential move comes as AI firms face intensifying scrutiny from lawmakers regarding the implications of advanced AI technologies and the ethical considerations of profit-sharing with the public. The proposed stake is seen as a strategy to fortify OpenAI's relationship with policymakers while addressing the growing regulatory challenges. Reports from the Financial Times indicate that these discussions are still in their early stages, with no confirmation on whether the proposal has been officially accepted or enacted. This consideration arises amidst rising public concerns about the impact of AI on employment and economic stability. Many Americans worry that the proliferation of AI could lead to significant job losses and concentrate wealth within a few large firms, leaving the broader population without a share in the technological benefits. By granting the government a stake, OpenAI aims to ensure that the public can also reap financial rewards as the company flourishes. Additionally, OpenAI recently faced delays in the global rollout of its latest AI model, GPT-5.6, as the Trump Administration called for further safety assessments. To navigate these regulatory hurdles, OpenAI is actively collaborating with government officials. Notably, other companies in the AI sector, such as Anthropic, have encountered similar challenges. Last month, Anthropic temporarily lost access to its advanced AI models, including Fable 5, due to a government order, although these restrictions were lifted on July 1. Discussions involving OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman have included key figures like Donald Trump, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Furthermore, OpenAI has proposed the creation of a “public wealth fund,” designed to distribute returns to citizens, thereby enabling the public to benefit financially from the advancements in the AI sector. Anthropic is also advocating for a “digital dividend,” which would allow citizens to receive a share of the wealth generated by AI through government-sponsored payments.
