OpenAI taps Tata for 100MW AI data center capacity in India, eyes 1GW

OpenAI has formed a partnership with Tata Group, securing an impressive 100 megawatts of AI-capable data center capacity in India, with ambitions to expand to 1 gigawatt. This strategic initiative is part of OpenAI's broader effort to enhance its enterprise and infrastructure presence in one of its fastest-growing markets. Announced on Thursday, this collaboration aligns with OpenAI's Stargate project, which is focused on developing AI-ready infrastructure and promoting global enterprise adoption. As the inaugural client of Tata Consultancy Services’ HyperVault data center division, OpenAI's initial commitment of 100 megawatts signifies a significant step in the realm of AI infrastructure. Additionally, the agreement includes the deployment of ChatGPT Enterprise across Tata’s workforce and aims to streamline AI-driven software development using OpenAI’s suite of tools. This partnership falls under the “OpenAI for India” initiative, reflecting the company's expanding influence in a country that, according to CEO Sam Altman, boasts over 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, including students, educators, developers, and entrepreneurs. The establishment of local data center capacity will enable OpenAI to efficiently run its cutting-edge models within India, minimizing latency for users while adhering to data residency, security, and compliance standards essential for regulated industries and government operations. By hosting computing resources domestically, OpenAI can significantly broaden its access to enterprises needing in-country data processing. The planned scale of the data center, increasing to 1 gigawatt over time, would position Tata's facility among the largest AI-focused data centers worldwide, underscoring OpenAI's ambitious long-term goals in India. Beyond infrastructure, OpenAI and Tata Group are set to collaborate strategically to enhance AI adoption across Tata’s diverse business sectors. The conglomerate aims to introduce ChatGPT Enterprise to its workforce in the coming years, starting with hundreds of thousands of employees at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), potentially marking one of the largest enterprise AI rollouts globally. TCS also plans to leverage OpenAI’s Codex tools for standardizing AI-centric software development across its engineering teams. N Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, expressed that the partnership with OpenAI would facilitate the development of “state-of-the-art AI infrastructure in India” and contribute to upskilling the local workforce for the AI-driven future. While specific financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, including whether OpenAI is investing capital in HyperVault or leasing capacity, TCS recently secured investment from private equity firm TPG to advance AI-ready infrastructure under its HyperVault initiative. This platform is supported by a projected ₹180 billion (around $2 billion) investment, aimed at accommodating extensive compute tasks for hyperscalers and enterprise clients. OpenAI is also set to enhance its certification programs in India, with TCS being the first organization outside the U.S. to participate. These certifications are intended to equip professionals with practical AI skills across various industries. This initiative follows OpenAI's recent partnerships with prominent Indian institutions in engineering, medicine, and design. With plans to open new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru later this year, in addition to its existing base in New Delhi, OpenAI is poised to deepen its operational footprint in the country. This expansion aims to facilitate enterprise partnerships, engage developers, and navigate local regulatory frameworks as the company grows its presence in India. The announcement coincides with India’s AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, featuring global leaders in AI, including Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who are engaging with Indian startups and enterprises to showcase AI innovations across sectors like finance, healthcare, and education.
