OpenAI draws a line between the company and a cofounder's political donations

In a recent announcement, OpenAI has sought to clarify its position regarding political donations made by cofounder Greg Brockman. The company's president, along with his wife, disclosed that they began contributing to political causes late last year. The couple has donated a substantial $25 million to Leading the Future (LTF), a political network that promotes AI initiatives and has garnered support from a range of Silicon Valley figures across the political spectrum. Reports indicate that LTF's primary super PAC had raised over $50 million by the end of 2025, with contributions from various entities, including a $100,000 donation from the AI lab Perplexity and a $25 million investment from venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, as documented in Federal Election Commission filings. In its statement, OpenAI emphasized that it does not control LTF's activities and lacks visibility into its operations. The organization made it clear that it has not contributed to any super PACs or political campaigns, nor does it have a PAC funded by employees. OpenAI assured that if any changes occur in their funding approach, they would communicate transparently with the public. Moreover, the company expressed its call for responsible AI regulation, urging that organizations involved in AI advocacy should be transparent about their policy positions and the interests they represent. They cautioned against tactics like astroturfing, which can obscure genuine political choices. OpenAI researcher Jason Wolfe shared his perspective on social media, expressing appreciation for the company's statement while acknowledging the skepticism that remains. He stated, "This is just a small step and people may still rightly be skeptical, but I hope we can earn trust through our actions going forward." Brockman had previously articulated on social media the necessity for the U.S. to collaborate with builders and innovators to ensure responsible AI development and maintain global competitiveness. OpenAI's clarification comes at a crucial time as discussions surrounding AI regulation are intensifying within political circles, with the industry contributing millions to various races this year.
