ChatGPT rolls out ads

OpenAI has announced the initiation of ad testing for users on its Free and Go subscription tiers in the U.S. This Go plan, which was introduced globally in January and costs $8 per month, will feature advertisements, while those on the Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education plans will remain ad-free. In a recent blog post, OpenAI addressed potential concerns regarding the impact of ads on user experiences. The company reassured users that advertisements will not influence the responses they receive from ChatGPT, and their conversations will remain private from advertisers. OpenAI aims to leverage advertising to enhance access to advanced ChatGPT features, while preserving the trust users place in the platform for personal and critical tasks. This announcement comes on the heels of a humorous campaign by Anthropic, a rival AI company, which aired Super Bowl ads mocking the potential integration of ads into AI services. These commercials depicted actors portraying AI chatbots delivering advice alongside poorly targeted advertisements, underscoring the possible disruptions to user interactions. The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, reacted strongly to Anthropic's campaign, labeling their approach as "dishonest" and characterizing the company as "authoritarian." Despite the backlash against the notion of ads within AI responses, OpenAI acknowledges the necessity to generate revenue to fund the development and expansion of its technology. Critics remain wary, fearing that advertisements could skew the quality of ChatGPT's responses. However, OpenAI insists that ads will be tailored to enhance user experience, based on helpfulness. Advertisements will be clearly marked as sponsored and distinctly separated from organic content. In their testing phases, OpenAI has explored the idea of displaying ads relevant to users based on their conversation topics and past interactions. For example, users looking up recipes might encounter ads for grocery delivery services or meal kits. OpenAI assures that advertisers will not have access to individual user data, only aggregate metrics related to ad performance, such as views and clicks. Users will have the capability to manage their ad interactions, including the option to dismiss ads, provide feedback, and adjust ad personalization settings. Importantly, ads will not be shown to users under 18 and will be excluded from sensitive topics, including health, politics, and mental health.
