OpenAI, Samsung form alliance to develop AI data centres, partner on Stargate

In a groundbreaking collaboration, OpenAI has joined forces with several affiliates of Samsung, including Samsung Electronics, Samsung SDS, Samsung C&T, and Samsung Heavy Industries. This partnership, formalized through a letter of intent, aims to enhance the global infrastructure for AI data centers and develop cutting-edge technologies. The announcement was made at Samsung's headquarters in Seoul, marking a significant step in the tech giant's commitment to AI advancement. The signing event saw key figures like Young Hyun Jun, Vice Chairman and CEO of Samsung Electronics, and other high-ranking officials from various Samsung divisions come together. Under this partnership, Samsung Electronics is set to become a strategic memory supplier for OpenAI’s ambitious Stargate initiative, which focuses on the creation of next-generation AI infrastructure. With OpenAI’s demand for memory projected to soar to 900,000 DRAM wafers monthly, Samsung is preparing to deliver energy-efficient and high-performance memory solutions tailored for AI applications. In addition to memory supply, Samsung SDS will collaborate with OpenAI on developing AI data centers and enterprise AI services. This partnership will encompass the design, deployment, and management of Stargate facilities, while also assisting businesses in integrating OpenAI’s innovative AI models. Furthermore, Samsung has secured a reseller agreement to provide OpenAI services in South Korea, including the popular ChatGPT Enterprise. Moreover, Samsung C&T and Samsung Heavy Industries will concentrate on pioneering floating data centers, a concept gaining traction due to its benefits such as lower cooling expenses, decreased carbon emissions, and minimized land usage. The partnership will also investigate the potential for floating power plants and control centers. This alliance aligns with South Korea's ambition to become a leading player in the global AI arena and demonstrates Samsung's broader strategy of embedding AI into its operations, including the expanded utilization of ChatGPT across its enterprises.
