On Tuesday, OpenAI unveiled a significant partnership with Oracle aimed at boosting data center capacity by 4.5 gigawatts for its Stargate AI infrastructure platform in the United States. This ambitious expansion is part of a staggering $30 billion annual agreement between the two tech giants, which will elevate OpenAI's total Stargate capacity under development to over 5 gigawatts. Located in Abilene, Texas—a city with a population of 127,000 and situated 150 miles west of Fort Worth—the new data center benefits from the region's established technology infrastructure, including Dyess Air Force Base and three local universities. Over the years, Abilene has transformed its economy from agriculture and livestock to a more tech-focused and manufacturing-oriented landscape. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, emphasized the scale of this project on social media, stating, "We have signed a deal for an additional 4.5 gigawatts of capacity with Oracle as part of Stargate. It's easy to throw around numbers, but this is a gigantic infrastructure project." He also indicated plans to amplify Stargate’s ambitions beyond the previously announced $500 billion investment commitment from January. This new agreement builds on OpenAI's earlier commitment to invest in 10 gigawatts of AI infrastructure over the next four years, which was announced at the White House. The expansion is expected to create numerous job opportunities across various sectors, including construction, operations, and indirect manufacturing and service roles. The cumulative 5 gigawatts of capacity, once fully operational, will require enough electrical power to supply approximately 4.4 million homes in the U.S. As OpenAI continues to innovate in AI, the energy demands for supporting such advancements remain substantial.
