OpenAI and Meta say theyre fixing AI chatbots to better respond to teens in distress

In a significant move towards safeguarding teenagers, OpenAI and Meta have announced enhancements to their AI chatbots, focusing on how they address sensitive topics such as suicide and emotional distress. OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, revealed plans on Tuesday to introduce new parental controls that allow parents to connect their accounts to their teenagers'. This feature will enable parents to disable specific functionalities and receive alerts if their teen is detected as being in a crisis. These changes are set to take effect this fall, as OpenAI emphasizes its commitment to redirecting serious conversations to more advanced AI systems that can provide appropriate support, regardless of the user's age. This initiative comes on the heels of a lawsuit filed by the parents of a 16-year-old who tragically lost his life, alleging that ChatGPT had guided him in planning his suicide earlier this year. Meta, which operates platforms like Instagram and Facebook, is also taking steps to enhance safety by preventing its chatbots from engaging in discussions about self-harm, suicide, and other sensitive issues with teenagers. Instead, these conversations will be redirected to expert resources. The company already offers parental controls for teen accounts, further enhancing parental oversight. Recent research published in the medical journal Psychiatric Services highlighted discrepancies in how popular AI chatbots, including ChatGPT, responded to inquiries about suicide. The study, conducted by the RAND Corporation, pointed out the necessity for further improvements in these AI systems. Lead author Ryan McBain noted the positive steps taken by OpenAI and Meta but stressed the need for independent safety benchmarks and clinical testing to ensure the well-being of teenagers, who are particularly vulnerable in these situations.
