OpenAI and Jony Ive remove 'io' branding from website amid trademark dispute

OpenAI has discreetly eliminated all mentions of "io," the hardware venture co-founded by Jony Ive, formerly of Apple, from its official website and social media accounts. This decision follows closely on the heels of a significant partnership announcement with a value nearing $6.5 billion, aimed at creating consumer-oriented AI hardware. Additionally, the original blog post and a nine-minute promotional video featuring Ive alongside OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have been removed. The now-inaccessible blog post outlined the collaboration, stating: "The io team, dedicated to developing inspiring and empowering products, will now join forces with OpenAI to collaborate closely with the research, engineering, and product teams in San Francisco." OpenAI has confirmed to The Verge that the partnership itself remains valid; however, the branding adjustment stems from a trademark dispute raised by Iyo, a startup that specializes in hearing devices and originated from Google's innovative projects. A court order appears to have necessitated the removal of the associated content. Kayla Wood, an OpenAI spokesperson, explained to The Verge, "This page is temporarily down due to a court order following a trademark complaint from iyO regarding our use of the name 'io.' We contest this complaint and are exploring our options." In response to the situation, a representative for Ive told Bloomberg that the challenge is "an utterly baseless complaint and we’ll fight it vigorously." Despite this branding complication, both OpenAI and Ive's team assert that their partnership is progressing. However, it remains uncertain whether the upcoming hardware products will carry the "io" branding. The initial announcement was hailed as a pivotal moment for OpenAI, marking its most ambitious venture into creating physical devices centered around human-centric AI experiences.
