OpenAI and Apple are taking a stand against a lawsuit filed by Elon Musk's xAI, which claims that the integration of ChatGPT into certain iPhone features breaches antitrust regulations. This legal action, initiated in August, stems from Musk's dissatisfaction expressed on social media about Apple's failure to include his AI product, Grok, on its 'Must Have' apps list, where ChatGPT is frequently featured. Musk argues that Apple's collaboration with OpenAI grants the latter exclusive access to a vast array of prompts, thus securing a monopoly in the chatbot market. He contends that this connection allows OpenAI to gather valuable training data, reinforcing its leading position in the industry. However, in recent court filings, OpenAI and Apple have ridiculed Musk's calculations, asserting that xAI's allegations lack merit. OpenAI contends that the estimates presented in Musk's complaint are unfounded. They pointed out that Musk hesitated to even provide a reliable estimate of the market share affected by the OpenAI-Apple partnership. xAI claimed that the integration of ChatGPT could potentially capture 'up to 55 percent' of available chatbot prompts, a figure that OpenAI argues is misleading. According to OpenAI, Musk's calculations are based on questionable assumptions, such as Siri reportedly handling '1.5 billion user requests per day globally,' which he then compared against an estimated total of '2.7 billion prompts for generative AI chatbots in 2024.' OpenAI explained that these figures do not take into account that ChatGPT integration is limited to newer iPhone models, and users must actively opt-in and link their ChatGPT accounts for data training. This restriction significantly narrows the pool of potential prompts available to OpenAI, further undermining Musk's claims.
