OnePlus has elevated its game with the launch of the Nord 5, presenting a device that embodies a significant advancement not only for the Nord series but also for the mid-premium Android market. I've had the opportunity to handle the device, and while I am restricted from discussing the display details due to OnePlus’ embargo, there are numerous features worth highlighting, particularly the design, build quality, and impressive specifications that accompany this smartphone. Upon unboxing the OnePlus Nord 5, users will find an organized package that includes the signature red charging cable, essential documentation, and an 80W SUPERVOOC fast charger. Additionally, a protective case is included, although the phone's premium aesthetic encourages many, including myself, to showcase its design without it. The Nord 5 boasts a bold design and premium finish. Weighing in at 211 grams, it feels solid yet well-balanced, featuring a sleek profile of just 8.1mm, which is slimmer than it appears. This year, OnePlus has switched from the all-metal design of its predecessor, the Nord 4, to a polycarbonate back. The device is available in three attractive colors: Marble Sands, Dry Ice, and Phantom Grey. I have the Marble Sands variant, which exudes a high-end feel, demonstrating OnePlus' mastery of design in recent years. The matte finish effectively resists fingerprints, while the sturdy side frame enhances its durability. Under the hood, the Nord 5 is powered by the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, a 4nm chipset that has gained popularity for delivering flagship-level performance while maintaining energy efficiency. To efficiently manage heat, OnePlus has integrated its Cryo-Velocity VC cooling system, featuring a 7,300mm² vapor chamber alongside a total heat dissipation area of 32,207mm². This setup is particularly beneficial for gamers, enabling smooth performance at 144 FPS on titles like COD Mobile and BGMI. In terms of camera capabilities, the OnePlus Nord 5 offers a competitive setup for its class. The rear main sensor is a formidable 50MP Sony LYT-700 equipped with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS), paired with an 8MP ultra-wide lens that includes macro functionality. The front-facing camera also boasts a 50MP Samsung JN5 sensor, capable of recording 4K video at 60 fps. Although I've had the chance to test the camera extensively, I will reserve my final thoughts for a comprehensive review after the official launch. Additional features include Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, an IR blaster, and dual SIM support with 5G compatibility. The device is also equipped with an array of sensors, haptic feedback through an X-axis motor, and an in-display fingerprint scanner. In conclusion, OnePlus appears to position the Nord 5 as more than just a budget-friendly option; it seems set to be a serious contender for those seeking premium performance and design without the flagship price tag. With its Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chipset, robust battery life, and promising camera setup, the Nord 5 already indicates a significant leap forward for the Nord series. The true test will arrive on July 8 at 2 PM when OnePlus reveals the pricing upon the official launch. If first impressions are any indication, the Nord 5 is off to an impressive start.
