The future of OnePlus has come under scrutiny as rumors of its impending shutdown have circulated since earlier this year. The situation escalated following significant executive departures and the company’s decision to scale back its operations. In a recent development, it has been reported that OnePlus is set to merge with Realme, including their Chinese operations. According to a source known as Digital Chat Station on Weibo, it appears that the merger between OnePlus and Realme is official. The two smartphone brands are expected to consolidate their global and Chinese operations into a new internal division referred to as a 'sub-product centre.' This strategic move may also extend to their marketing and customer service divisions, potentially leading to a streamlined approach. Key leadership changes are anticipated, with Pete Lau, co-founder of OnePlus and a prominent figure within the BBK Electronics ecosystem, likely to take charge of the newly merged entities. Additionally, Li Jie, who currently serves as the president of OnePlus China, is expected to lead the new product center, while Wang Wei, the former vice president of Realme, is poised to assume the role of deputy general manager. Moreover, Li Bingzhong, founder of Realme, is anticipated to head the combined business operations, with Xu Qi managing marketing and service for both brands. This merger could result in OnePlus and Realme sharing product lines, designs, and resources, potentially reducing costs and eliminating redundancies. Historically, OnePlus has operated as a sub-brand within Oppo's framework, with Realme reportedly entering this ecosystem earlier this year. However, with the prospect of a more integrated operational structure, the distinctive identity of OnePlus in the premium smartphone market is now in question. As of now, neither OnePlus nor Realme has officially confirmed the merger, leaving the industry speculating about the future of both brands.
