A recent controversy has erupted on social media concerning an AI feature from OnePlus and Oppo, which failed to process a fundamental question: "Is Arunachal Pradesh a part of India?" While Oppo has yet to issue an official statement addressing the issue, OnePlus characterized the situation as a "technical glitch" in a community update, announcing an internal investigation to uncover the root cause. In their post, OnePlus acknowledged receiving multiple reports about inconsistencies with the AI Writer in the OnePlus Notes app. They stated, "We promptly launched an internal investigation and shared an early update yesterday outlining our hybrid AI architecture and our collaboration with global model partners." To address the ongoing concerns, the company has temporarily disabled the AI Writer feature to maintain a reliable user experience while they work on resolving the underlying technical issues. OnePlus also confirmed to Mint that they are aware of the technical problems affecting the AI Writer and have taken it offline for urgent repairs and optimization. This AI editing tool, found in OxygenOS 16 and ColorOS 16, was designed to assist users in refining their text before sharing it on social media or while drafting notes. Users quickly noted a peculiar behavior with the AI tool, which seemed capable of editing various types of content but faltered when faced with material that clashed with China's official stance. The Chinese government claims Arunachal Pradesh as part of southern Tibet, referring to it as "Zangnan." The Indian government, however, has dismissed these claims, asserting that the state has been under effective Indian administration for decades and that such fabricated names do not alter the factual situation. While OnePlus has not disclosed the specific AI model utilized for the AI Editor tool, the nature of its recent performance suggests it may rely on a Chinese large language model, such as DeepSeek or Qwen, known for similar tendencies to censor content diverging from the Chinese government’s narrative. Attempts to access the AI Editor feature after OnePlus's update resulted in a frustrating error message stating, "feature not supported on this page."
