OnePlus 15R vs Pixel 9a: Which phone is the best buy under₹50,000?

OnePlus 15R vs Pixel 9a: Which phone is the best buy under₹50,000?

The smartphone landscape has been invigorated by the launch of the OnePlus 15R, touted as a 'value flagship,' which sets a new standard in the sub-₹50,000 segment. Competing directly with Google's Pixel 9a, this comparison seeks to determine which device offers the best value for consumers in this price range. Starting at ₹47,999 for the 12GB/256GB model, the OnePlus 15R can be snagged for as low as ₹44,999 with some promotional offers. The Pixel 9a initially debuted at ₹49,999 for its base variant but is now frequently available for between ₹42,000 and ₹45,000. The OnePlus 15R impresses with its 6.83-inch 1.5K LTPS AMOLED display, boasting a remarkable 165Hz refresh rate and protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 7i. Additionally, it features IP68, IP69, and IP69K ratings, making it the most water and dust resistant phone in its class. In comparison, the Pixel 9a offers a smaller 6.3-inch Full HD+ OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, falling short in both resolution and durability. Under the hood, the OnePlus 15R is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor, an upgrade from its predecessor's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. This newer chipset, along with dedicated Wi-Fi and touch response chips, is designed to enhance network speeds and provide a smooth, low-latency experience. In contrast, the Pixel 9a utilizes the Tensor G4 chipset, which has faced criticism for overheating and lacks the raw performance of its Qualcomm rival. Battery performance is another strong suit for the OnePlus 15R, which comes equipped with a massive 7,400mAh battery, the largest ever seen on a OnePlus device, and supports 80W wired fast charging. The Pixel 9a, however, is limited by a smaller 5,100mAh battery and only 23W wired charging, with no charger included in the box. On the software front, the OnePlus 15R runs on OxygenOS 16, based on Android 16, featuring advanced functionalities like AI Eraser and Mind Space, along with a promise of four years of OS updates and six years of security patches. The Pixel 9a, on the other hand, operates on stock Android with a commitment to seven years of updates and security, although it lacks the extensive customization options available on OnePlus devices. In terms of camera capabilities, the OnePlus 15R boasts a 50MP primary sensor paired with an 8MP ultra-wide lens and a 32MP selfie camera, offering 4K video recording at 120fps. The Pixel 9a features a 48MP main sensor and a 13MP ultra-wide lens, along with a 13MP selfie camera capable of 4K video at 30fps. While OnePlus appears to have the upper hand in hardware, Google’s software optimization often delivers stunning photographic results, making direct comparisons challenging without side-by-side testing. For users who demand high performance for gaming and multitasking, the OnePlus 15R is a clear contender with its superior specs, including the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, substantial battery life, and rapid charging capabilities. However, if software longevity, immediate access to Google's AI features, or a more compact device is a priority, the Pixel 9a may be the preferable option.
