
In the world of data centers, the escalating demand for computational power driven by AI has led to some unexpected challenges, including bacterial outbreaks. These facilities often utilize liquid cooling systems, where the coolant is a blend of water and an antibacterial agent. To enhance cooling efficiency, data center managers can increase the water content, but this can result in contamination that obstructs the flow of coolant. To address this issue, operators typically must flush the system, which can lead to extensive downtime of five to six hours, costing companies millions. However, Omen AI has introduced a groundbreaking solution: a compact spectrometer that continuously monitors the health of the cooling fluid, detecting bacterial growth before it escalates into a significant problem. "You’re not risking huge amounts of downtime because you have no insight into what’s going on chemically,” states Zach Laberge, CEO and founder of Omen AI. Recently, Omen AI announced a successful $31 million Series A funding round, led by Nava Ventures, with contributions from various investors including CRV and Mann+Hummel, as well as executives from notable companies like GM and Bridgestone. Laberge, who founded his first company at just 14, started Omen in 2024, focusing on enhancing fluid systems to create smarter construction machinery. Initially, Laberge's venture aimed at real-time monitoring of fluid systems to eliminate the delays associated with lab analysis. The spectrometer not only detects bacterial growth but can also identify wear in pumps and seals by analyzing the presence of specific metals like copper and silicon. Omen quickly gained traction, particularly with Caterpillar dealerships, which also supply gas-powered turbines for data centers. Recognizing a shift in demand, Omen pivoted to target data centers, where fluid management is crucial across various systems. “It’s rare to see such a young founder who has the respect of established, large corporations in a space that moves a bit more slowly,” remarked Cory Rellas, a partner at Nava Ventures. To date, Omen has raised a total of $40 million and is collaborating with approximately a dozen data center clients, including TensorWave, which is developing an AI compute cloud with AMD technology. "The fluid running through these massive systems is a critical variable that most of the industry is flying blind on,” explained Piotr Tomasik, president of TensorWave. While traditional methods involve sending fluid samples to labs, Omen AI is not alone in its innovative approach. Companies like Pyxis have also begun offering on-premises analytics solutions for coolant monitoring. Recent advancements in optical technology and signal processing have made real-time fluid analysis not just feasible but scalable, as Laberge noted, "Hardware is just cheap enough that it makes sense to play at scale, and then signal processing lets us make more sense out of the noise."
