AI job exposure highest among older, highly paid and educated workers, Anthropic report finds

A recent report from Anthropic highlights that older, female, and highly educated professionals are more likely to be affected by the rise of artificial intelligence in the workplace. Titled "Labour market impacts of AI: A new measure and early evidence," the study introduces a novel metric known as "observed exposure" to evaluate the impact of AI systems, including advanced language models, on various job sectors. The findings of the report challenge the prevalent belief that automation mainly endangers lower-skilled or less-paid positions. Instead, it suggests that generative AI may significantly influence white-collar jobs. As organizations across multiple industries begin to integrate AI tools to streamline tasks—ranging from writing and coding to customer service and data analysis—questions arise regarding the future landscape of white-collar employment. Anthropic's research merges theoretical capabilities of large language models with practical usage data to assess the potential extent of work that AI could automate. This new approach prioritizes tasks where AI completely replaces human efforts over those where it merely assists. Furthermore, despite the remarkable advancements in generative AI since late 2022, actual implementation in the workforce remains considerably lower than what these models are theoretically capable of achieving. The report notes, "AI is far from reaching its theoretical capability: actual coverage remains a fraction of what’s feasible." The study also reflects on labor market trends following the rise of generative AI tools, finding little evidence of widespread job losses among roles deemed highly exposed to AI. "We find no systematic increase in unemployment for highly exposed workers since late 2022," the report states. However, the researchers did identify early indicators that hiring practices might be evolving, particularly regarding younger workers entering the job market, suggesting a slowdown in recruitment in exposed occupations for this demographic.
