Okta beats fourth-quarter estimates, but issues weak guidance

Okta has reported impressive results for its fourth quarter, exceeding Wall Street forecasts as the demand for secure identity management solutions continues to rise, driven by the increasing use of artificial intelligence agents. The company’s revenues saw an 11% increase compared to the previous year, reaching a notable $63 million net income, translating to 35 cents per share, a significant improvement from last year’s $23 million or 13 cents per share. However, Okta's guidance for the upcoming first quarter fell short of analyst predictions. The company projects revenue to fall between $749 million and $753 million, with adjusted earnings expected to range from 84 to 86 cents per share. In contrast, analysts had anticipated revenue of $755 million and earnings of 87 cents per share. Management attributed this cautious forecast to current market conditions, echoing similar sentiments expressed in their previous financial outlook. As the landscape of cybersecurity evolves, Okta emphasizes its role in addressing the security needs that arise from the surge in agentic AI. This comes amidst a backdrop of heightened pressure on the cybersecurity sector, particularly following a recent security tool launch from Anthropic that sparked market concerns. Notably, Okta's stock has declined by approximately one-third this year. CEO Todd McKinnon spoke to CNBC about the significant opportunities presented by agentic AI and the innovative solutions developed by vendors in the market. He underscored the importance of building trust and a solid reputation as a reliable security infrastructure provider over time. "You have to have trust, and you have to have a reputation that you can deliver this securely," he stated. Moreover, Okta's subscription backlog, known as remaining performance obligations, rose by 15% year-over-year to reach $4.83 billion, surpassing StreetAccount’s estimate of $4.62 billion. For the full fiscal year, the company anticipates revenues between $3.17 billion and $3.19 billion, aligning closely with the analyst consensus of $3.17 billion.
