OkCupid, Match pay no fine for sharing user photos with facial recognition firm

In a recent development, OkCupid and its parent company, Match Group, have come to an agreement with the Trump administration regarding the unauthorized sharing of user photographs, location data, and personal information with a facial recognition firm. This settlement, facilitated by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), pertains to an incident that occurred in 2014 involving nearly 3 million user images. As part of the deal, neither OkCupid nor Match Group will face a financial penalty. Instead, they have committed to a permanent ban on misrepresenting their practices concerning the use and sharing of personal data. Although the companies did not admit to any wrongdoing, they expressed relief at resolving the issue without incurring fines. An OkCupid spokesperson emphasized, "While we do not admit any wrongdoing, we have settled this matter with the FTC with no monetary penalty to resolve an issue from 2014 and move forward." The spokesperson also highlighted that the alleged practices in question do not reflect the current operations of OkCupid, noting that the platform has made significant strides in enhancing its privacy policies and data governance in recent years. Despite a recent ruling that has constrained the FTC’s enforcement capabilities, the agency retains the authority to pursue deceptive advertising claims in courts. The FTC's scrutiny of Match and OkCupid stemmed from their collaboration with Clarifai, a company specializing in AI-driven facial recognition technologies intended for diverse sectors, including military and government applications.
