US oil industry doesn’t see profit in Trump’s “pro-petroleum” moves

Despite the Trump administration's ongoing efforts to bolster the fossil fuel sector in the United States, the oil and gas industry appears hesitant to embrace these new opportunities. Prominent leaders and organizations within the industry have voiced concerns regarding alterations to long-established government policies that previously provided a stable framework for their operations. The financial outlook for oil and gas exploration is shifting, countering the administration's optimistic narrative. While politicians may promote the potential for offshore drilling and exploration in the Arctic, the commercial viability of these ventures remains uncertain, if not improbable. Having spent decades immersed in the energy sector, I have witnessed numerous instances where companies struggled to advance projects due to either insufficient resource discoveries or challenging geological conditions that hindered development. Market dynamics are the primary influences driving investment decisions in U.S. energy, rather than political maneuvers aimed at appearing supportive of the industry. The significant decline in oil prices from 2022 through late 2025 has further dampened the appeal of many drilling initiatives. Although the prospect of permitting drilling along the East and West coasts may seem promising, these areas are characterized by unverified reserves. This necessitates extensive preliminary work, including seismic surveys and reservoir characterization, which could take years before any actual drilling can commence. Moreover, offshore drilling is met with substantial resistance. Notably, California Governor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta have issued strong opposition to new offshore oil drilling initiatives in the state, labeling them as economically unnecessary and environmentally harmful. Additionally, local governments, environmental organizations, and coastal communities in California are united against these efforts, pledging to utilize legal and political avenues to thwart any drilling attempts.
