Anthropic, Blackstone bet the next trillion-dollar AI business is implementation, not models

Ode was conceived after Blackstone recognized a need for effective AI integration across its portfolio companies, leading to the acquisition of the AI engineering startup Fractional AI. This startup has now formed the backbone of Ode, evolving into a “scaled boutique” AI services firm. Chris Taylor, CEO of Ode and co-founder of Fractional, expressed optimism about the venture’s potential, stating that with successful execution, it could evolve into a trillion-dollar enterprise. Currently, Ode employs around 100 engineers, collaborating closely with Anthropic’s applied AI team to tailor solutions for various businesses. While Anthropic will continue handling strategic deployments, Ode aims to attract a diverse range of clients, with a focus on those whose leadership is committed to embracing AI. Ode operates under a “Claude-first” approach, prioritizing the integration of Anthropic’s technology while remaining open to utilizing competitor products when necessary. Eddie Siegel, Ode’s chief technologist, emphasized that the venture’s success hinges on its implementation quality and the ability to customize solutions to meet specific business challenges. Taylor believes that companies not traditionally associated with AI stand to gain significantly if they can adapt the technology effectively. However, this transformation requires access to top-tier applied AI talent, which is often scarce. Ode's team comprises elite generalist software engineers, many of whom are former entrepreneurs, capable of tackling complex technical issues and managing projects from start to finish. With the demand for such skilled engineers outpacing the supply, Ode faces the challenge of scaling its workforce while preserving its boutique service ethos. Competing against established players like OpenAI and consulting firms such as Deloitte and Accenture adds another layer of complexity. Siegel remains confident, highlighting that the entrepreneurial landscape has never been more accessible, suggesting that many engineers will learn vital skills through hands-on experience in ownership and problem-solving. As the AI race intensifies, the focus may shift from merely developing advanced models to effectively deploying them within major organizations.
