Nvidia’s AI empire: A look at its top startup investments

Nvidia has emerged as a dominant force in the AI landscape, experiencing remarkable growth in revenue, profitability, and cash reserves since the launch of ChatGPT over two years ago. This surge in financial success has led the chipmaking giant to significantly increase its investments, particularly in AI startups. In 2024, Nvidia participated in an impressive 49 funding rounds for AI companies, a notable rise from 34 in 2023, reflecting a dramatic escalation compared to the 38 AI deals it funded over the previous four years combined. This wave of investment does not account for those made through Nvidia's corporate venture capital fund, NVentures, which has also seen a sharp increase in activity. NVentures engaged in 24 deals in 2024, compared to just two in 2022. As of now, Nvidia has already taken part in seven funding rounds in 2025. Nvidia’s investment strategy aims to bolster the AI ecosystem by supporting startups deemed as “game changers and market makers.” Since 2023, several startups that raised over $100 million have welcomed Nvidia as a participant. For instance, Nvidia invested $100 million in OpenAI during a massive $6.6 billion funding round that valued the company at $157 billion. This initial investment came shortly after Nvidia's commitment to OpenAI, which was significantly overshadowed by Thrive's substantial $1.3 billion investment. Elon Musk's xAI also caught Nvidia's attention, with the company participating in a $6 billion funding round. This move indicated a departure from OpenAI’s request for its investors to avoid backing direct competitors. In another notable investment, Nvidia led a $1.3 billion round for Inflection AI, founded by DeepMind's Mustafa Suleyman, although Microsoft later acquired Inflection’s core technology for $620 million, leaving the startup's future uncertain. In the autonomous driving sector, Nvidia contributed to a $1.05 billion round for Wayve, a U.K.-based startup developing self-learning systems for autonomous vehicles. Moreover, in May 2024, Nvidia joined forces with tech titans like Amazon and Meta to invest $1 billion in Scale AI, a company specializing in data-labeling services, significantly increasing its valuation to nearly $14 billion. Other significant investments include $686 million in Crusoe, which builds data centers for major tech companies, and $675 million in Figure AI, a robotics startup. Nvidia also participated in rounds for Mistral AI, Lambda, and other notable startups, continuing its trend of backing companies that utilize its GPU technology. As Nvidia continues this aggressive investment strategy, it underscores its commitment to shaping the future of AI through strategic partnerships and funding initiatives. The company's diverse portfolio reflects its intent to remain at the forefront of the AI revolution, supporting innovative startups that promise to redefine the landscape of technology.
