Nvidia wants to cut data center water use, but that’s not the same as fixing AI’s water problem

Nvidia has unveiled an innovative warm-water cooling system designed to significantly lower the water consumption of data centers. According to Josh Parker, Nvidia's chief sustainability officer, this new system could virtually eliminate internal water usage within these facilities. He claims, "The water consumption challenge for data centers is largely solved," as stated in a recent Axios interview. However, the issue of water usage extends beyond the confines of data centers. While Nvidia’s technology may effectively reduce water use inside the facility, it does not address the broader impact of water consumption related to electricity generation and chip manufacturing, which can considerably inflate the overall water footprint of a data center. The company’s approach involves a closed-loop coolant system that is filled once and recirculated for the duration of the facility's life. In optimal conditions, this method could achieve a complete reduction in on-site water use. The coolant circulates through server racks at a temperature of 45°C (113°F), allowing it to efficiently remove heat without the need for evaporative cooling or fans, thus enhancing operational efficiency and minimizing noise. Despite these advancements, the reliance on fossil fuel-powered electricity remains a pressing concern. Fossil fuel plants are substantial water consumers; for instance, they collectively draw approximately 2.7 billion gallons of water daily in the U.S., primarily for cooling purposes. The water usage statistics reveal that natural gas plants require about 1.17 liters of water per kilowatt-hour generated, while coal plants use even more at 2.2 liters per kilowatt-hour. Interestingly, while renewable energy sources like wind and solar utilize minimal water, projections indicate that natural gas and coal will still account for over 40% of the new electricity needed to support data center demands through 2030. This suggests that unless there are significant shifts towards sustainable energy, data centers may continue to contribute to considerable water usage, irrespective of Nvidia’s internal water management strategies.
