Nvidia’s Huang says any Pentagon–Anthropic rift is 'not the end of the world'

During a recent interview, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang addressed the ongoing tensions between the U.S. Department of Defense and AI company Anthropic, asserting that the situation is not catastrophic. Huang's remarks followed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's ultimatum to Anthropic, which requires the company to relax its restrictions on the Pentagon's use of its AI technologies by Friday, or face the potential loss of its government contract. Should Anthropic fail to comply with these demands, Hegseth has indicated that the company could be classified as a 'supply chain risk' or that the Defense Production Act might be invoked. In a conversation with CNBC's Becky Quick, Huang emphasized both the Pentagon's authority to utilize technology that serves its interests and Anthropic's autonomy in determining how it markets its products. "Both sides have reasonable viewpoints," he stated. The negotiations between Anthropic and the Defense Department have reached an impasse, primarily because Anthropic is seeking guarantees that its AI models will not be employed in the development of autonomous weapons or in mass surveillance operations targeting American citizens. Conversely, the Pentagon is pushing for Anthropic to consent to 'all lawful use cases' without any restrictions. Huang expressed hope for a resolution but also noted that even if an agreement is not reached, it would not be disastrous, highlighting that Anthropic is just one of many AI companies available and that the Department of Justice represents more than just a single customer. Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers and executives, Anthropic is recognized for its Claude family of AI models and secured a $200 million contract with the Department of Defense last year.
