Nvidia CEO pushes back against report that his company’s $100B OpenAI investment has stalled

In a recent statement, Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang refuted claims suggesting that the company's significant investment in OpenAI is facing difficulties. These comments came in response to a report from The Wall Street Journal, which alleged that Nvidia might be reconsidering its $100 billion investment in the AI firm. The partnership, announced in September, involves Nvidia providing substantial financial backing and infrastructure support, including 10 gigawatts of computing power. However, the WSJ report indicated that Huang has started to highlight the nonbinding nature of this agreement and has raised concerns regarding OpenAI's business strategies amidst rising competition from other tech giants, including Anthropic and Google. Despite the speculation, Huang emphasized that Nvidia remains committed to OpenAI, asserting that discussions are ongoing, albeit with a potential shift towards a more modest equity investment of several billion dollars. An OpenAI representative confirmed that both companies are collaboratively navigating the details of their partnership, underscoring Nvidia's crucial role in supporting OpenAI's advancements. During a recent engagement in Taipei, Huang reiterated his strong belief in OpenAI, describing it as one of the most significant companies of our era. He stated that Nvidia is poised to participate actively in OpenAI’s upcoming funding round, calling it a wise investment. While he refrained from disclosing specific investment figures, he expressed confidence in OpenAI’s future undertakings, leaving the announcement of funding details to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Reports suggest OpenAI is working towards a substantial funding round, with collaboration talks ongoing among major players like Nvidia, Amazon, Microsoft, and SoftBank, further indicating a strong interest in the future of AI development.
