Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, has addressed rumors regarding tensions with OpenAI, affirming that the tech giant is set to make what could be its most significant investment in the company behind ChatGPT. In a press conference held in Taipei on January 31, Huang rejected recent allegations of discord and a stalled agreement, labeling such claims as "complete nonsense." Huang's statements come in response to a Wall Street Journal article that suggested a monumental $100 billion partnership was on hold due to uncertainties within Nvidia. He firmly expressed his belief in OpenAI, calling it "one of the most consequential companies of our time." While he acknowledged that the initial $100 billion figure discussed in a memorandum of understanding last September was non-binding, he reassured that Nvidia's commitment to OpenAI remains strong. "We are going to make a huge investment in OpenAI," Huang declared. He confirmed that Sam Altman is finalizing a funding round, and Nvidia will definitely participate, indicating this investment could be the largest in the company's history. However, when asked if the amount would match the previously mentioned $100 billion, Huang clarified that it would be "nothing like that," and emphasized that the final investment would align with OpenAI’s immediate funding requirements rather than the long-term infrastructure vision. This announcement comes at a time of heightened activity in the AI sector, with other major corporations like Microsoft and Amazon reportedly considering investments of up to $60 billion in OpenAI. The startup is aiming for a valuation around $830 billion, according to various reports. Analysts, as noted by Reuters, believe that while Nvidia is expanding its interests—potentially forming closer ties with Elon Musk's xAI—retaining a stake in OpenAI is crucial for strategic reasons. By ensuring OpenAI has the necessary funding to maintain its leadership, Nvidia secures the future of its high-performance Blackwell chips, which are essential to the ongoing AI revolution.
