Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang talks chip restrictions with Trump, blasts state-by-state AI regulations

During a recent meeting with former President Donald Trump, Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang addressed critical issues surrounding chip export restrictions, particularly concerning advanced artificial intelligence technology. The discussion came as lawmakers consider new proposals aimed at limiting the export of AI chips to countries such as China. Huang reiterated his support for export controls, emphasizing the need for American companies to have priority access to these advanced technologies. "We should ensure that American companies have the best and the most and first," he stated while speaking to reporters on Capitol Hill. The conversation took place in the context of the proposed Guaranteeing Access and Innovation for National Artificial Intelligence Act (GAIN AI Act). This legislation, which is being evaluated for inclusion in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), would mandate that chip manufacturers like Nvidia and AMD prioritize U.S. companies in the sale of AI chips before exporting them elsewhere, particularly to China. However, sources suggest that this proposal may not make it into the NDAA, which Huang described as a prudent decision. Huang further expressed concern over the potential establishment of a fragmented system of state regulations for AI technology. He warned that such a patchwork of laws could severely hinder the industry's progress and pose national security risks. The CEO pointed out that swift advancements in AI technology are crucial for the United States. In response to these challenges, Huang advocated for a cohesive federal approach to AI regulations. This call for a unified standard echoes sentiments expressed by Trump last month, who urged lawmakers to preempt state regulations with a federal standard. However, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise indicated that there currently isn't enough support for this initiative to be included in the NDAA, but discussions will continue in pursuit of a national AI standard.
