Jensen Huang still steps in to settle internal fights over Nvidia's scarce AI chips, executive says

Nvidia faces its own challenges amid the ongoing AI chip shortage, particularly within its automotive division, which is in fierce competition for access to the highly sought-after GPUs that have propelled the company to become the world's most valuable. Xinzhou Wu, Nvidia's automotive head, revealed during an episode of The Verge's "Decoder" podcast that the company is grappling with a limited supply of GPUs for its computational needs. As demand for Nvidia's chips escalates—driven by AI firms constructing enormous data centers—various teams within the company frequently vie for the computing resources essential for developing and testing their AI models. Wu explained, "We have an internal priority, and I'm working with my colleagues almost weekly to determine how to allocate this computing power, sometimes for training and other times for testing across different projects." Occasionally, the situation necessitates intervention from CEO Jensen Huang, highlighting the high stakes of resource allocation within a company whose GPUs serve as the backbone of the burgeoning generative AI landscape. The demand for Nvidia's chips has consistently outstripped supply as numerous companies, including OpenAI, Microsoft, Meta, xAI, and Amazon, race to develop increasingly sophisticated AI models. Wu indicated that the criteria for making these allocation decisions extend beyond immediate revenue considerations. "It's all of the above," he stated, emphasizing Nvidia's approach to balancing present business requirements with future strategic initiatives. One such initiative is the pursuit of what Huang refers to as "the zero trillion dollar business," which encompasses entirely new markets that could eventually be valued in trillions. A key focus for Nvidia is the realm of autonomous driving. Wu expressed the company’s belief that "everything that moves will be autonomous" and noted that Nvidia is making significant investments in providing chips, software, AI models, simulation tools, and safety systems for self-driving vehicles. Despite the automotive sector being considerably smaller than Nvidia's flourishing data center business, Huang continues to prioritize advancements in this area. "We are strong believers—Jensen himself as well—of the AV [autonomous vehicle] future," Wu affirmed. He added that the company is committed to investing in both the technology and the future, which includes not only external compute allocation but also semiconductor manufacturing capacity, another internal battleground amid soaring demand for Nvidia's chips.
