Nvidia’s China-bound H20 AI chips face Beijing scrutiny over ‘tracking’ and security concerns

Nvidia is navigating a complex landscape as it looks to resume exports of its H20 AI chips to China, following assurances from U.S. authorities. However, the company now faces heightened scrutiny from Beijing regarding potential national security implications of these advanced processors. Recent discussions between Nvidia and officials from the Cyberspace Administration of China have highlighted concerns over the H20 chips. The CAC has requested Nvidia to provide detailed documentation addressing security risks, including any vulnerabilities or potential backdoors associated with these units. This comes in the wake of a lifted export ban that had been in effect since April. The CAC's statement raised alarms over reported security vulnerabilities in Nvidia’s chips, echoing calls from U.S. lawmakers who are advocating for mandatory tracking features on advanced semiconductor exports. Notably, a report revealed that American experts have identified capabilities within Nvidia’s technology that could facilitate tracking, positioning, and even remote shutdown functionalities. Lawmakers like Bill Foster, a Democrat from Illinois, are pushing for legislation that would require AI chip manufacturers to incorporate systems that would allow tracking of their products. This proposed bill aims to empower U.S. authorities to shut down chips that are operated without appropriate licenses, a measure designed to combat chip smuggling and address export loopholes. As these developments unfold, Nvidia has reportedly ordered 300,000 H20 chipsets from TSMC to meet the burgeoning demand in China. The situation has sparked significant concern among U.S. lawmakers, who fear that easing restrictions on Nvidia’s technology could bolster Beijing's capabilities in artificial intelligence.
