Nvidia CEO says the idea of decoupling from China is 'naive' and 'not based on any common sense'

Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, has criticized the notion of the U.S. completely decoupling from China, labeling it as 'naive' and lacking common sense. During a recent episode of the 'No Priors' podcast, Huang emphasized that moving away from China, whether for philosophical or national security reasons, does not align with practical realities. As Nvidia anticipates the opportunity to resume selling advanced chips in China, Huang commended former President Trump's pragmatic approach to managing the complex relationship between the two economic superpowers. He expressed optimism about improving relations, suggesting that while China may be viewed as an adversary, it also serves as a crucial partner in various capacities. He believes the idea of decoupling is overly simplistic. The potential return to the Chinese market, which Huang estimates could yield around $50 billion annually, is on the horizon. Recent reports indicate that China may approve sales of Nvidia's H200 chips in the near future, following a shift in U.S. policy that now allows limited sales of older models, contingent on the U.S. receiving a share of the profits. Huang has consistently stated that the U.S. should not impede China's progress in artificial intelligence by restricting advanced chip sales. During a news conference at CES in Las Vegas, he noted that he does not anticipate any formal announcements from Beijing regarding the sales, suggesting that orders will likely be placed quietly without fanfare. Regarding the broader U.S.-China dynamic, Huang advocates for both nations to bolster their independence. He acknowledged that excessive reliance on one another can complicate the relationship. Huang noted that a strategic and nuanced approach is essential for fostering a constructive partnership that benefits not only the two countries but also the global community. He concluded by stating the importance of finding a sustainable resolution, emphasizing that the world relies on a productive relationship between these two influential nations.
