Jensen Huang says he regrets not investing more in xAI: 'Almost everything Elon's part of, you want to be part of'

During a recent interview with CNBC, Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, shared his thoughts on his investment in Elon Musk's artificial intelligence venture, xAI. He admitted that he wishes he had committed more resources to this promising startup, highlighting it as one of his few investment regrets. Huang's reflections came amidst discussions about Nvidia's financial involvement with xAI's latest funding round. When questioned about the potential implications of Nvidia financing AI startups that subsequently purchase its chips, he expressed enthusiasm for the opportunities this financing presents. "I'm incredibly excited about the financing opportunity they're pursuing," Huang remarked. He went on to clarify that, although Nvidia is already an investor in xAI, he feels he could have contributed more. He commended Musk's exceptional ability to create groundbreaking companies, stating, "Almost everything Elon's part of, you really want to be part of as well." Huang characterized xAI as part of a transformative wave of AI companies, including OpenAI and Anthropic, which are innovating within the computing landscape. He pointed out that while these companies previously operated at a loss, recent advancements have made their technologies not only functional but also profitable. He emphasized that the current phase of AI investment is fundamentally different from the dot-com boom, driven by tangible demand worth trillions of dollars. "In the past, all internet companies combined barely reached $40 billion in valuation, but today, the major players in the tech space represent about $2.5 trillion in business," he highlighted. Huang also noted that the transition from traditional CPU computing to GPU-powered generative AI is just beginning, signaling a significant investment opportunity for Nvidia. Lastly, Huang shared that AI is now integral to his company's engineering team, with every engineer benefitting from AI assistance, which has dramatically boosted productivity.
