Jensen Huang says a $100 billion investment in OpenAI is 'probably not in the cards'

At a recent Morgan Stanley conference in San Francisco, Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang addressed the topic of a potential $100 billion investment in OpenAI, stating that such a significant financial commitment is unlikely to materialize. Huang emphasized that while the investment might not be on the horizon, Nvidia has secured a substantial $30 billion agreement to invest in the AI powerhouse, which is expected to go public by the end of this year. Huang stated, "This might be the last time we'll have the opportunity to invest in a consequential company like this," highlighting the strategic importance of the partnership. Last year, Nvidia had discussed the possibility of investing up to $100 billion in OpenAI as part of a collaboration aimed at enhancing AI infrastructure, including plans to develop at least 10 gigawatts of AI data centers utilizing Nvidia technologies. With a focus on providing the immense computing power necessary for OpenAI to train and deploy its models, Huang expressed confidence that the revenues from this investment would follow suit. He also mentioned that Nvidia's $10 billion investment in rival company Anthropic is likely to be their final major commitment in that sector. Anthropic, known for its AI model Claude, is reportedly gearing up for its own public offering, and investor interest is surging, according to Joseph Alagna, a founding partner of Buttonwood Funds, one of Anthropic's largest stakeholders. Huang's remarks come amid speculation about potential internal tensions regarding the investment in OpenAI, as per reports from The Wall Street Journal. However, he dismissed any notions of discontent, reaffirming his strong belief in OpenAI's mission and the leadership of CEO Sam Altman. "I believe in OpenAI. The work that they do is incredible," Huang affirmed, noting that Nvidia is prepared to make one of its largest investments to date. In a separate appearance on CNBC, Huang expressed his eagerness for a future opportunity to invest in OpenAI's IPO. OpenAI remains one of the most valuable privately-held AI companies and a crucial client for Nvidia's chips, integral for training and operating advanced language models. Although OpenAI has not officially announced plans for an IPO, the considerable capital and computing resources required for its next growth phase have led to speculation about funding strategies. Investor Michael Burry recently highlighted the transformative impact of ChatGPT, likening its launch to a catalyst for a multi-trillion-dollar investment race in AI infrastructure, suggesting that businesses worldwide are now gearing up for a future centered around AI technology.
