Nvidia's Huang downplays concerns over selling AI chips to Beijing: It has 'plenty' of its own

Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, has dismissed national security worries surrounding the sale of advanced semiconductors to China, asserting that collaboration benefits both nations. Speaking at a press conference in South Korea, Huang expressed his commitment to advocating for continued access to the Chinese market, expressing optimism that China will persist in its demand for U.S. chips as it aims to establish itself as a leader in AI technology. "The Chinese market is singularly important, dynamic, and irreplaceable," Huang stated. He emphasized that it is advantageous for the U.S. to engage with China, and likewise, for China to welcome American technology. Huang remarked, "I hope policymakers will recognize this mutual benefit." These statements come at a time when the U.S. has imposed export restrictions that limit Chinese companies' access to advanced semiconductors essential for AI development. Former President Donald Trump revealed that he had discussed Nvidia chip exports with Chinese President Xi Jinping, although they did not cover the latest Blackwell graphics processing units. Huang countered concerns over national security by noting that China is capable of producing its own AI chips. He pointed out that the Chinese military has significant access to domestically manufactured semiconductors. "China has its own AI technology and has blocked access to certain Nvidia chips," he said during an interview with CNBC. He also highlighted the competitive landscape, acknowledging the capabilities of Huawei in the tech sector. Despite the ongoing tensions, Huang praised Huawei for its technological advancements and their leadership in 5G standards. "They are a formidable competitor, and we take that seriously," he concluded, underscoring Nvidia's commitment to innovation in order to stay ahead in the fast-evolving market.
