Nvidia just spent over $900 million to hire Enfabrica CEO, license AI startup's technology

In a significant strategic maneuver, Nvidia has allocated more than $900 million to bring Enfabrica's CEO, Rochan Sankar, and other key personnel onboard, as well as to license the startup's advanced technology. This development, first reported by CNBC, mirrors similar talent acquisitions made by industry giants like Meta and Google. The deal, finalized last week, includes a combination of cash and stock, according to sources familiar with the negotiations who requested anonymity due to the private nature of the arrangement. Nvidia's investment underscores its pivotal role in the AI landscape, particularly following the explosive growth of AI technologies initiated by OpenAI's ChatGPT launch in late 2022. Nvidia's graphics processing units (GPUs) have become foundational in training large language models and enabling cloud providers to deliver robust AI services. Enfabrica, established in 2019, boasts technology capable of interconnecting over 100,000 GPUs, potentially enhancing Nvidia's offerings by allowing clusters to operate as unified computing systems. While Nvidia declined to comment on the specifics of the transaction, the implications are substantial. The company has evolved from earlier AI chips like the A100, which were singular processors, to more sophisticated systems that utilize racks of 72 GPUs working collaboratively. This architecture aligns with the recent announcement of a $4 billion data center in Wisconsin by Microsoft. Previously, Nvidia had invested in Enfabrica during a $125 million Series B funding round in 2023, which saw a remarkable fivefold increase in valuation from its initial Series A round. Enfabrica also secured an additional $115 million in late 2022 from various investors, including Nvidia's competitor, Advanced Micro Devices, alongside notable firms like Spark Capital, Samsung, and Cisco. The landscape is increasingly competitive, with tech titans such as Meta, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon aggressively pursuing top AI talent through similar arrangements. These 'acquihire' deals enable companies to onboard elite engineers and researchers while sidestepping the complexities of traditional acquisitions. For instance, Meta's acquisition of Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang for $14.3 billion in June marked one of the largest transactions in this arena. Despite its prominent presence in AI infrastructure investments, Nvidia has historically been cautious in making acquisitions. Its most notable previous deal was the $6.9 billion purchase of Israeli chip designer Mellanox in 2019, which significantly influenced its current product lineup. Attempts to acquire chip design company Arm fell through in 2022 due to regulatory obstacles. In recent months, Nvidia has also made headlines with a $700 million acquisition of Run:ai, a company focused on optimizing AI infrastructure, alongside a $5 billion investment in Intel aimed at collaborative AI processor development. This latest investment in Enfabrica highlights Nvidia's commitment to expanding its influence in the AI sector.
